25-29 November 2024
Leader: Dave Cox
After a pleasant overnight in Hanmer Springs and a car shuffle to Lewis Pass we were off.
Heading past Cannibal Gorge Hut, we reached Ada Pass Hut for the first night – lovely views and our first meeting with a couple who we paced for the rest of the trip.
The next day we headed over Ada Pass (it’s so flat, there is a sign to tell you it’s there) and headed down the Ada River – beautiful mixture of wide-open flats and forest.
Night 2 was in Christopher Hut which is enclosed within a horse-proof fence built by the horse- trekkers. It was lovely to see the wild horses up close the next day.
Swinging into the Henry River Valley with open fairly sparse vegetation, we arrived at Anne Hut (a real palace) for night 3 where we enjoyed cards and the foot puppet show.
Next day we headed up the Anne River and over Anne Pass (the short and only significant climb on the trip). Down the Boyle River on a hot day to find it was empty of water. Fortunately, a fast running and drinkable creek was nearby.
Down river on the last day with a quick side trip to bag Magdalen Hut and head back to Hanmer Springs – hot pools all round.
A great area, a great team and superb weather.
Those on the trip were:
Chantal Heller, Dave Cox, Julie James, Maryann Bugg, Rob Dey, Susan Robertson, Yingjun Shelton
