We met up at the Reikorangi end of the Mangaone track. The walk follows Te Araroa. It first goes along a forestry road through some areas of pines that were felled a few years ago. The first bit is flat, then the route crosses a stream before climbing up a ridge. It started drizzling as we climbed up the ridge through the pines.
After about a kilometre the pines ended and we entered the bush. This sheltered us from the drizzle. The track continued up the ridge before levelling off about 3 km from the edge of the pines. The drizzle stopped near here. We then had a couple km through the mist and forest to Pukeatua, at 813m altitude. We had a bite to eat on the small open area at Pukeatua. There were no views due to the mist. We retraced our route back to the cars. In all about 3 hours up and a little faster down; a climb of about 700m.
