Mt McKerrow

Sunday 26 May 2019

Leader: Owen Cox

Eleven of us walked in to the Remutaka range from the Catchpool.

We went up Clay Ridge to Mt McKerrow. Some nice views of Wellington and the Harbour from near the top of Clay Ridge.

At the track intersection some stopped for lunch while others did the 300 meteres (flat, not vertical) to the top of Mt Mckerrow. They took photos while balancing on the survey pipe before joining the others for lunch. From here we dropped down the ridge to the Orongorongo track and back to the Catchpool.

Nice weather and in a few spots there were plenty of birds. Most notably kaka near Mt McKerrow and hordes of other birds in kahikatea and rimu (in berry) on the Orongorongo track. All in all a pleasant 6 hours’ walk. Fifteen kilometers and vertical climbing of 1046m and a high point that was 711m above sea level.

Those on the trip were:

Owen Cox, Marian Cox, Eva Petro, Tim Allott, Darrel Sutherland, Peter Davis, Julia James, Carol Rolton, Helen Baber
