Wakelings Hut

23-26 April 2021

Leader: David Williams

Wakelings was one of a handful of Ruahine huts I had left to bag.

GUO, Marcia and I headed out Friday night and it took us three hours to walk up the slippery Kawhatau River in the dark to Kawhatau Base to camp for the night. The expected rain didn't come and on Saturday we headed up Colenso, across the Mokai Patea Range and gradually dropped down to Wakelings Hut for the night. What an awesome wee spot and hut! And, we had a comfy night! On Sunday we headed back up, across the tops for a short spell, and then down and up to McKinnon Hut for the night. It was cold and we were pleased for the fire and club arsonist. On Monday, a pleasant stroll back to the car and home. An awesome weekend in one of my favourite areas of the Ruahine Range.

Those on the trip were:

David Williams, Marcia Goode, Owen Cox
