Leader: Patrick Liss
Twenty two of us met at the Whareroa car park at 8.30 am for this popular day walk. We hadn’t been able to climb Mt Wainui for quite some time due to Covid and then the Regional Council’s logging some of the pine forest in the area. However we had permission this time.
It was a cold, mainly fine morning as we set off up beside the old top-dressing strip and then up a steep road through partially milled pines. At the top of the road we veered off through over-grown farm land where we encountered some goats and saw lots of pig sign. A steady climb through the native bush had us at the top about 3 hours after we had left the cars. It was a bit chilly and there were even one or two snowflakes in the air.
The top of Mt Wainui has changed a lot in the last few years, now sporting a transmission station and several banks of solar panels. The western peak is now a helipad! However the old trig is still there and the magnificent views from Porirua Harbour to Kapiti Island and beyond haven’t changed.
After lunch we descended the same way through the bush and then followed a road formed for the logging operation and finally back down via The Rocks track.
The round trip took about 6 hours.
