Leader: Elisabeth Hynes
16 of us met at the carpark at the end of Kahuterawa Road on a reasonably fine Sunday morning. The track starts off nice and easy following the river with lots of swimming holes and a small waterfall. After about half an hour the track gets steeper, and we had to climb up a few hundred steps as well, to get to the top. The effort was well worth it as we had great views over the Manawatu.
After a drink and snack stop, we followed the Toe Toe loop track where we found a sunny sheltered spot for lunch.
In the afternoon we had plenty of time to explore the platinum mines. On went the headtorches and down the ladders we climbed. One horizontal shaft had a good population of cave weta. From there it was a straightforward walk down the hill back to the carpark
All in all a very enjoyable day walk.
Those on the trip were:
