19-21 April 2024
Leader: Dave Cox
Friday dawned with the promise of fine weather with some wind. High Ridge beckoned.
After the mandatory coffee stop, and meeting up with Kylie at the Holdsworth carpark, our group of five headed off. It was a straight-forward climb to Powell Hut. We were later joined by Viv who arrived after sunset. A pleasant evening was had by all with June teaching us a new card game.
Saturday dawned fine, with light winds. We set off and climbed up to the High Ridge turn-off. Heading along the open tops of High Ridge we passed the memorial to Lester Tweeddale. He was the subject of a major unsuccessful search in 1969. His body was later found in Isabelle Creek.
The route along High Ridge and down to Totara Flats ranged from obvious to obscure, requiring us to scout around. There was more windfall and undergrowth than on previous trips which slowed us down, extending our travel time. Overall though, it was a very pleasant ridge especially at the goblin forest upper end.
We reached Flaxy Knob in good spirits where we had lunch, before setting off on a steep descent to Totara Creek and the hut. The downhill track had a variety of: no markers, old orange tin lids, venetian strips, several types of coloured tape and a few blazes. Several rude remarks were made comparing the age of some of the markers to the age of unnamed trip members. These comments were best ignored and are not for the record.
On Sunday we took the standard track back to Holdsworth Lodge in misty, drizzle conditions, with raincoats on from the Mountain House turnoff.
Those on the trip were:
Dave Cox, Yingjun Shelton, Adrian Jull, Rob Dey, Kylie Gilbert, Viv Roberts
