Ready to go, our starting point at Lyall
We checked out the local cemetery
Old Boot
Another old boot (sigh)
There were plenty of old relics to see
...On the subject of old relics
It hailed for 5min - when we stopped for lunch!
Hey Papa Smurf
Lyell Saddle hut
Isaac - dodgy hat bro!
It was a nice sunset
Group shot before we left
view from hut - Lyall Range and Upper Mokihinui River valley ( south branch)
a lot of work had gone into the track
scroggin stop
Breaking out of the bush
Rocky Tor awaits our arrival
Hmm I should sue them for copyright (stealing my pose n all!)
Wraps for lunch - we all took ingredients and shared a trampers lunch buffet!
St John and DW decided to climb Thor before they ate
Made it
The others climbed it after lunch
Except for Isaac, who sat and ate more lunch
Smurf does the final clamber to the top
One of the private cabins at Ghost Lake
Some sat and ate ghost chips
While DW climbed the hill
808 score card. St John won - beginners luck!!!
it was a brilliant sunrise
but it was misty by the time we were ready to leave Ghost Lake hut
Ghost Lake hut and the 'love shack' (L)
It was quite a drop from the top
An earthquake caused this
Back into the bush and the last of the benched track for awhile
Lunch stop
The door on this bridge is to stop pests
...but the pests have learnt how to open the door
...and now they are rampant in the forest
Stern Creek hut
It rained overnight, the river was way up..
Great weather for Ducks!
Solemn Saddle was awaiting us in the mist
Lake Cheerful, just before the climb over Solemn Saddle
Climbing up to a saddle
Nice composition DW
Misty forest
A good place for lunch
Nothing like a cuppa with a buddy, or any dude in a blue merino will do
Mokihinui Forks hut
It was a lovely spot
There were lots of rats in the roof
This used to be a lake after the Murchsion Earthquake
We lit a fire to try and keep the sandflies away...it didn't work
Next morning - where the two branches of the Mokihinui meet
Specimen Point hut - we wished we'd stayed there - it was an awesome hut
...with stunning views
Sometimes pictures are just so much better without people in them (especially if the are ugly old trampers!)
there has been some impressive track work - all the way
Morning tea by an old miners hang out
Why the hell would they want to dam this stunning river?
Rimu grove
The last remains of an old mining village. Still in use!
And we made it
Gravel cam
Except we had to walk another 2k down the road and through the ford to meet the van
