21-23 March 2025

Three of us signed up for the tramp. Our intention was a quick there-and-back sojourn along the tops to Herepai Hut. However, it's never quite that simple in the Tararua Ranges.

The genesis of this adventure is a little different to most. Kate had planned a leisurely 5-day trip along the southern main range beginning and ending at Otaki Forks. The tramp sounded perfect to me, but sadly it was not to be.

The Tararua Challenge provided an opportunity for club members to explore some of the more remote and demanding areas of the Tararuas.

This trip is one of the hut bagging ones. Originally down as a three day trip we pared it back to a day trip to Snowy Hut as both Kime and Winchcombe were bagged on earlier trips, leaving Snowy as an outlier.

Five Parawai ladies set off from Kapiti for Waiohine carpark with a coffee stop along the way. At this point, on this gorgeous summer day, a serious discussion ensued around how very pleasant it would be to spend the day at the Martinborough fair then camp at Lake Ferry. However as this was to be a Tararua hut bagging trip and we might get a telling off, on we drove to the roadend.

I was very excited to see this trip on the trip list, as I have wanted to do this trip for some time but have been reluctant to undertake it alone. So on the morning of 23 February, two of the most intrepid and keen members of the club (though not necessarily the fittest) met to set off on our wonderful and long-anticipated adventure!

On a sunny Thursday morning our two cars converged on the Eketahuna café for caffeine and refreshments before heading for the Putara road end.
