Five of us headed to Greytown on Friday for a relaxing evening of chatting and dinner at the Greytown Campground.

Peter picked me up early on Friday afternoon for the drive over to the Upper Waingawa Road end. We left the road end after 3 pm to walk along the vehicle track to the start of the track.

Seven intrepid trampers and one volunteer driver met at the school on Saturday morning and headed off in two cars to the Ngatiawa Road end. A couple of the group walked in crocs for the stream crossings at the start of the trip (softies) and changed into dry socks and boots for the climb to Kapakapanui.

Although some way off being the highest peak in the Ruahine, Te Atuaoparapara is certainly one of the most impressive, particularly when its craggy, shingly summit is viewed from the south - a prospect that was hidden from the fourteen of us who approached it from the north on day two of our weekend wander.

Eight of us met at Paekakariki at 9:00am and set off up the hill road. After about 50 meters there is a track on the left beside a stream, which took us to the Fly-by-wire site, and from there we took a path to the left which led us up to the Telcom tower with a great view of Paekakariki railyards.

This trip was proposed and deferred a couple of times but finally the plan was firmed up for ANZAC weekend, with 3 starters; Glen, Gordon, and Viv. Sadly, Glen became unwell and had to pull out a couple of days before. So Gordon and I headed off on Friday morning to take ourselves to Cow Creek Hut. We did a leisurely pace… I mean ‘I did’, and Gordon tolerated it! We took approximately 6 hours from the road end to Cow Creek Hut – all good.

This trip was originally scheduled from Battle Hill to Whareroa Farm but forestry work at Battle Hill made that trip very difficult to organize. So, a combined Paekakariki Hill - Kohekohe Loop - Escarpment Track Walk was planned as an alternative.
