Makaretu Hut 12-13 September

We headed up the Apiti track in the Ruahines. Then we dropped down into the Makaretu River and on to the hut. Some camped, with others staying in the hut. The next morning we spilt into two groups. One group went up the track to the main range and Te Pohatu. The other group went up the ridge behind the hut following an old hunters route to the main range. Both groups met up on spot hight 1232 on the Apiti track and headed back to the cars at the Ngamoko road end.

Heading up the Apiti track

A quick rest before we headed down to the river

Monsta

Badjelly

Down into the river

It was beautiful

Susan crossing

Some of us tented

While others crammed into the hut

It was such a lovely day Sunday, we decided to go out over the tops rather than the river, breaking into two groups

You don't see many of these anymore...an experimental area to protect plants from deer and the like

You don't see many of these either

Queen Elisabeth (III) negotiating windfall

It was an awesome 600m climb

Rupe at the top

The other group took another route up

They too reached the top

Our efforts were well rewarded

Doesn't get much better than this

The other group walked across the tops to join up

Clown!

Down again we went, through beech forest

Rupe at an intersection

Back down Apiti track to the cars and the end of an awesome weekend
