Penn Creek Hut 17-18 October
A very wet trip into Penn Creek Hut. Saturday - Otaki Forks, Table Top and down to the hut. It rained heavily that night. Sunday - The stream at the bottom of the track to Table Top was impassible, so we bush bashed our way up the adjacent ridge, with just a few groves of leatherwood to contend with, to Table Top. Then down to Field Hut and out to Otaki Forks.
But we were having fun
Exit stage left to Penn Creek
It was nice stroll down the hill to the creek
Penn Creek was up slightly
but the side stream was low
Almost there
It poured all night and this was Penn Creek the next day
Sodden ground
The same side stream we'd crossed the day before
Clearly we wouldn't be crossing it today
So we climbed for four hours to the ridge
Some of it in leatherwood
But overall a good bush bash. We eventually came out into the open tops
and reached the top of Table Top
and found the track again
Walking down to Field hut was like walking in a river
We stopped at Field hut for some hot soup
Then headed back to Otaki Forks in the sun (it stopped raining!)
The Waiotauru river was up a bit
