Sunrise - North Waipawa 26-27 July

For a long time some of us Ruahine guys had contemplated descending the scree into the North Waipawa River.  The night before, supping mulled wine  at Sunrise Hut, we briefly struggled with the Wilderness magazine crossword clue "a series of small waterfalls". As it turned out, the answer - cascade -perfectly defined the headwaters of the North Waipawa. Fortunately though, the cascades were easily negotiated on a pleasant walk down to Waipawa Forks where we met up with the 4 of our group who'd decided to take the track instead.

This is a trip we will repeat!

Lighthearted times on the Sunrise track

Contemplating tomorrow's route

Sunrise @ Sunrise

Looking across to the scree we descended into the North Waipawa

The high point (elevation-wise) of our trip

Easy scree ahead

Into the steep creek bed

Plenty of cascades to scramble down in the North Waipawa

With only 16km of walking and a mere 900m ascent, and despite the scrambles in the North Waipawa, it was a fairly easy trip
