Leader: Owen Cox
Three of us did a walk from the Waikawa road end into the Panatewaewae Stream. It was drizzly pretty much all day but not cold and no real heavy rain.
We went up the old logging road which now called the Ridge Track. Got to the end of this not long after 12:00pm and had lunch on the spur which drops from spot height 437 into the Panatewaewae Stream. Some kind soul has done work on this track and it now easy to follow and quite clear. The track comes out on top of the flats. From lunch we walked down the stream and flats back to the forks of the Waikawa Stream.
Here we picked up the track to an old road end. The old road end is now cut off by a slip so no maintenance has been done for a while. There is about 8cm of swampy moss over the old car park now and we then picked up the old road back to the car. There is a track that climbs around the slip which drops you back to the road a little further into the Park than the start of the Ridge Track. If you only have a car and not a Remuera tractor (aka 4 wheel drive) I would recommend you don't go beyond the second gate on the road by car - we parked there and shortly after were pleased we did as there are few water traps, holes and rocky bits that a car couldn't cope with.
Those on the trip were:
