Queen's Birthday 5-7 June 2021
Leader: Owen Cox
Five of us drove up on Friday night and camped at the road end. It was a chilly night so we enjoyed a soak in the hot pools there.
In the morning Tony, Sue and Marcia were dropped off at the start of the Middle Hill Track. From there they went up to Middle Hill Hut and across the gullies to spend Saturday night at Makino Hut. Chantal and I went up the river track to have lunch at Te Puia Lodge before carrying on to the Mangatainoka Hot Springs. Here we selected a campsite. Once the tent was up I wandered back to Te Puia Lodge to meet the people who drove up on Saturday morning and then showed them the campsite. After dinner we had a soak in the pools.
Sunday was a bit moist. We went from the camp site down to Makino Stream and then up the hill to Makino Hut. We met Tony, Sue and Marcia near the hut before having lunch. We then headed back to the campsite for more soaking in the pools, with some having a second go after dark.
Monday was free of rain so we enjoyed the wander back to the cars. Dinner was in Dannevirke.
Those on the trip were:
Rob Dey, Sue Pate, Tony Quayle, Owen Cox, Chantal Heller, Marcia Goode, Chris Keating, June Skelton, Glenda Robb
