Parawai Tramping Club

Kapakapanui

Sunday 3 October 2021

Leader: Owen Cox

There were 16 of us on the trip. While is was grey and misty there was little wind and it was not cold.

After the initial river crossings we headed up the southern track from the memorial at the forks. After a couple of hours climbing we stopped off at the small, grotty hut high on the ridge. We had been told this hut had been fixed. Fixing seemed to consist of some plastic over the roof. The hut was still grotty, and still had water running down the inside of the walls. The ambiance was completed with a good crop of interior mould and algae. And no water, as the water tank was holed and not connected.

After this brief stop we carried on through the cloudy forest to the top for a brief gathering at the trig. There were no views, so instead of stopping for lunch we dropped to the proper hut for lunch. This one is in good condition and was nice and dry. After lunch we headed down the northern track along the ridge and back to the memorial and then the cars.

It was a good day trip with a nice big climb and it fills a day with just over 3 hours walking up and about the same down.

Those on the trip were:

Chris Keating, David Williams, David Wilson, Glenda Robb, Graeme Richardson, Jing Zhou, John Sturgess, Kate Livingston, Marian Cox, Nisa Promchot, Owen Cox, Paula Richardson, Rob Dey, Sue Sparkes, Yingjun Shelton
