Parawai Tramping Club

City To Sea Walkway

Sunday 10 September 2023

Leader: Patrick Liss

A lovely fine spring day greeted us as we met at the Wellington Cenotaph. Some of us had come by bus (buses replaced trains) and some had driven.

We walked up through Bowen Street Cemetery to the Rose Gardens where we met up with Robyn who was joining us for part of the walk. The route goes from there up to the Cable Car and down to and across Kelburn Park, below the Victoria University grounds and eventually through to Aro Valley. Unfortunately Penny had a fall when we got to Aro Street and had to be taken to Wellington Hospital by ambulance. It was later confirmed that she sustained a hip fracture and she had surgery later that week.

Once Penny had been attended to (her family were to meet her at the hospital), the rest of us continued. The walkway winds up past a community garden and down and across Central Park. It then heads east and through several short walkways and parks. We stopped for lunch on a grassy slope overlooking the Scottish Highland Band clubrooms!

After a pleasant lunch stop and a little sunbathing we continued south to Berhampore, skirting around part of the golf course there and then climbing up to Quebec Street. From there the route continues up to Te Rauparaha’s statue and south to Island Bay.

That’s the end of the official walk. We got a bus back to our starting point and made our various ways home. A great day, though marred by Penny’s accident.

Those on the trip were:

Brandon Holman, Bryan Wild, Chris Keating, Clive Kayser, David Williams, Jen Perry, John Glover, Maryann Bugg, Pam Glover, Patrick Liss, Penny Currier, Robyn Wilson, Sandra Rowland, Shally Webb, Stephen Bowler, Yingjun Shelton, Mike Caruthers
