Mt Wainui

Sunday 2 July 2023

Leader: Patrick Liss

Eleven of us gathered at Whareroa Farm for another Mt Wainui day trip. It was somewhat cool, but fine and pretty good for the middle of winter!

Our route this time was up the East Ridge and on to Campbell's Mill Road. We followed the road (which has now been made wide enough for logging trucks) all the way to a saddle that gives easy access to a grassy spur. This leads straight up to join the marked track that leads up to the top. The track was surprisingly dry (it’s usually wet and muddy all year round). Damien and I stopped about 20 minutes short of the top for our lunch while the others had lunch on top where they enjoyed great views from the South Island, Wellington and Porirua Harbours in the South to Kapiti Island in the North. After lunch I continued briefly to the top as the others came down.

We followed the same track down, but then took the marked track down to the cattle yards. From here we re-gained Campbell's Mill Road and then returned to the carpark via The Rocks track.

A most enjoyable day which took about 7 hours.

Those on the trip were:

Carol Rolton, Chris Keating, Glen Cattermole, Glenda Robb, Lindsey Griffiths, Owen Cox, Patrick Liss, Peter Davis, Tony Quayle, Damien Ruth, Mike Caruthers
