Leader: Tony Quayle
This close-to-home walk was a good chance to practice smartphone GPS navigation in an area where tracks can often be confusing.
Planned as an anticlockwise circuit over Titi and Maunganui, the latter summit was abandoned in light of deteriorating weather and, possibly, a lack of enthusiasm.
The first section from the Perhams Road carpark had some nice confusing old logging trails that provided a good lesson of following your GPS rather than your nose, but once we started climbing the navigation was generally straightforward. We found a semi-sheltered spot along the ridge for lunch then descended back to the Maungakotukutuku stream, initially along the ‘main’ Maunganui track, but quickly branching off (intentionally) onto one of the less-used routes.
Along the way Sue ticked another geocache off her list and Nisa photographed numerous colourful mushrooms.
Clearly our navigation was successful, and we didn’t lose anyone along the way.
