Cycling Paraparaumu To Otaki

Sunday 24 March 2024

Leader: Bryan Wild

Our group set off on a balmy sunny autumn morning for a great day's cycling.

We rode alongside the expressway collecting people as we went. Approaching Otaki, we took the gravel track leading to Te Roto Road. From there we cycled up Rahui Road, passing the racecourse.

We cut across a local farmer's property who had earlier given Bryan permission for our group to cross his land via his private gravel road. After crossing the boundary electric fence we joined another gravel road and cycled west, through the Crystals Bend area next to the Otaki River and got back onto the expressway cycleway, having done the northern loop. We could almost smell the coffee as we cycled towards Ruth Pretty’s Café which was only 10 minutes ride away!

We had a pleasant rest sitting in the sunshine as we waited for our drinks and scones to be prepared. As the temperature climbed, we scrambled to find some shade under what seemed to be the last remaining outside table with a sun umbrella. After an hour or so of chat and banter, we made our way back along the expressway. People started to peel off for their homes from Peka Peka onwards.

Those on the trip were:

Bryan Wild, Graeme Richardson, Kate Livingston, Rob Dey, Robert Adams, Jimmy Gan (Robs mate)
