Leader: John Glover
Excellent winter weather enticed seven of us to take this interesting day walk, this time from south to north.
Having travelled from Kapiti by a bus-replaced train, we boarded a No 1 bus and rode to Island Bay. A few steps after alighting, we entered The Grocer's Shed café for refreshments and conversation. Once our caffeine requirements had been satisfied, we began our walk.
The variety of this walkway is hard to beat. As we progressed northwards, we had views first to the South over Island Bay. A view of the Seaward Kaikoura Range - and a photo stop - was had from the top of Mount Albert. As we moved northwards we were next able to look down on Kilbirnie, to the East.
After passing the zoo, we made our way through Melrose, and arrived at the Truby King Mausoleum about 12.30pm. Here we stopped for a relaxed lunch break in the sun. Then it was on through eastern parts of Newtown as we headed north to Mount Victoria.
After the majority voted to summit the mount, we all climbed the steps (its not actually part of the walkway, but still worth the detour) and took in the 360° view. Enough relaxing! It was time for the last push down to Oriental Bay.
This last section of the track is of course mostly downhill. However, we found quite a few uphill stretches as we made our way down. Looking north over the harbour, more photo stops were made.
Having reached our destination, we relaxed in the bus shelter. By and by a No 14 bus came and returned us to the railway station. Thanks to all the participants for making this a fun day out.
