Parawai Tramping Club

Round Ruapehu

12-15 November 2020

Leader: Owen Cox

Nine Parawais spent a few days in November going around Ruapehu. We planned it so that one group of 5 people took 4 days and the other of 4 people took 5 days.

We started at the Chateau and headed east past Tama Lakes to Waihohonu for the first night. The weather was very kind to us. The next day we split into the two groups with one going to Mangaehuehu and other stopping at Rangipo. Again good weather, though maybe a bit too sunny as sunburn was an issue for some with quite hot heat around lunchtime. Awesome views though.

Both groups were lucky enough to get packs taken by car up the Ohakune road but three of the 4 day people had to walk the stretch up the road. Thank you to those giving the rides, much appreciated. Cathy headed out down to Ohakune to get to a do on Saturday night and Darrel also but to get home on the Sunday.

The bush around the south side of the mountain was a nice change from the barrenness on the eastern side of the mountain.

The 4 day party got to the Chateau on Sunday afternoon and the 5 day party on Monday in time for lunch in town. An excellent trip with good weather, even given a couple of the days proved a bit longer than expected. Check the photo album for more.

Those on the trip were:

Owen Cox, Marian Cox, Susan Robertson, Dave Cox, Darrel Sutherland, Cathy Fraser, Marcia Goode, Niamh Dunne, Julie James
