Glacier Burn

Friday 18 March 2022

Leader: Peter Davis

After the trip to Earnslaw Burn we had a 2 day break, based at Kinloch, before doing the Sugarloaf-Rockburn and the Rees-Dart circuits.

The first day was relaxed - getting some laundry done, repacking for the next trips and exploring the sights and tastes of Glenorchy.

On the second day we had a day tramp on the Glacier Burn track. The car park and start of the track is around 20 minutes drive back along the road from Kinloch, direction Glenorchy. The track follows the Glacier Burn (stream/river) through mixed beech forest up to the glacier basin. It is a gradual ascent on a relatively easy and well marked track to the bushline.

We had a gloriously sunny, windless and warm day. It took less than two hours to get into the open and rocky area of the glacier basin. We had lunch on a rocky outcrop with views up into the mountains and back down the valley to the area around Glenorchy. Most of the group then climbed up further to explore the basin while Kate and David relaxed in the sun.

The return journey was back along the same track. About two thirds of the way down there was a bit of excitement when Peter realized he was missing his mobile phone. A small group retraced our steps through the beech forest and then fanned out over the rocky area searching for said phone. It was found at a spot where he had rested and it had slipped out of his shorts pocket. Lesson here?

It was then a short drive back to the accommodation at Kinloch. The Glacier Burn track can be recommended as a lovely day tramp.

Those on the trip were:

David Williams, Kate Livingston, Kylie Gilbert, Paul Michl, Peter Davis, Yingjun Shelton, Anne Bate, Rob Dey
