Earnslaw Burn

14-16 March 2022

Leader: Peter Davis

We'd all read about and seen photos of Earnslaw Burn and were eager to see it for ourselves. We set off on a Monday morning, knowing we'd be unlikely to see many people and apart from a couple of people heading out, we had the valley to ourselves.

The sidle track was pretty easy-going and took us around four hours to reach the rock bivvy. The majority of us crossed the river for a look and were impressed with the set up, although we decided to head further up the valley to camp. 30 minutes later we found a suitable spot, plenty of room for all the tents and a fire place all set up with seating on a bank. After setting up tents, we had a relaxed night and all slept well.

The next day we set off to explore the burn further up the valley. It only took a few hours to get there and despite some low cloud hanging over the glacier, we could see the grandeur and scale of the stunning hanging valley. The cloud eventually lifted and we were afforded the most amazing views of the valley and glacier with millions of photos (yea literally!!) taken. We played under a waterfall for a while, then went on towards the burn to explore. A few of us climbed into a small (cold) canyon with a mighty waterfall, while others climbed up the burn face to a patch of snow - a few were even lucky enough to see a chamois.

After many hours of exploring the amazing burn, we stopped for lunch by a tarn. Shortly afterwards a helicopter landed with three old school friends enjoying their annual trip away together. We headed back to camp, all on a high from a fun day and entertained ourselves around the fire that night making the most hilarious and stupid videos. After another relaxing night, we headed back out along the sidle track, ending an amazing trip to one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

Those on the trip were:

David Williams, Elisabeth Hynes, Kate Livingston, Kylie Gilbert, Neville Grubner, Paul Michl, Peter Davis, Yingjun Shelton
