12-14 March 2022
Leader: Paula Richardson
While the rest of the Parawais were walking the Old Ghost Road, Graeme and I decided to bike it. The Old Ghost Road is graded 3/4 but we thought we’d give it a go anyway.
We fitted out our bikes with carriers and panniers and left Lyell with the rest of the group who were tramping. A bit of initial bike trouble saw the trampers travelling faster than the bikers! But once we got our bikes sorted all was well and we made good time up to Lyell Saddle Hut for lunch. It was a stiff climb but we biked most of it. Lyell Saddle to Ghost Lake Hut was spectacular so we didn’t mind pushing our bikes for a lot of it! Ghost Lake Hut was a welcome sight.
Next morning we set off down the skyline steps, not easy with bikes, but an incredible track-building feat. We had some lovely riding down to our lunch stop at Stern Valley. Again our afternoon was spectacular, going through the boneyard and up to Stern Valley Hut, all appreciated again mostly on foot! This was followed by a super cool ride to Specimen Point Hut. This was a long day and we were knackered and glad we had decided to bike it over three days.
The next day was a lovely ride out to Seddonville. Would I ride it again? Yes!!!!
