Wairaka Point - Pukerua Bay

Sunday 11 December 2022

Leader: Owen Cox

We had a fine day for a walk from Pukerua Bay to Wairaka Point.

We gathered in Wairaka Road and then walked up through the bush of the Raroa reserve. At the top of the reserve we were above the cliffs. We then headed along the top of the coastal reserve above the steepest bit of the hill and around to the ridge above Wairaka Point. There are glorious views along the way. We then dropped down the route to the gravel beach, about half a kilometre south of the point. A minor scramble near the bottom and a good view of the small waterfall on the way down.

We enjoyed lunch on the beach and I had a small swim. Then back around the coast to Beach Road in Pukerua Bay. Tony met here for the walk back up to Rawhiti Road and Wairaka Road. As a small detour we checked out the head of the gully behind the houses in Rawhiti Road and the library on Wairaka Road.

All up, about three to four hours walking.

Those on the trip were:

Darrel Sutherland, Marian Cox, Owen Cox, Robyn Wilson, Susan Robertson, Yingjun Shelton
