Peru: Ausangate Circuit June-July
The second leg of the Peru trip, a six day circuit around Peru's second higest mountain Ausangate
Friday, 12 June 2015
We arrived in a field and unpacked the van
Dale and Rex made friends
Our circuit was anti-clockwise over six days
followed closely by the horses
This little fella got chased by a dog and was frightened
So I taught him how to take photos with my camera...he was a natural (umm I'm up here!!)
We eventually got off the dirt road
It was chilly the next morning as we headed off
Pistol and Raul - we convinced him to come on the second trip
Vicuna (rare relative of the Llama)
It was a stunning landscape
We climbed a hill for the view - it was so worth it
Dale and Rex take a load off
Our big climb up to the pass
Hungry looking bunch don't you think
We all gave an offering to Ausangate (coca leaves and sugar)
Give us a couple of hours and we'd knock the bastard off I reckon
Heading down the other side
The muleteers were great guys and always laughing
Queen Elisabeth (III) having a regal moment with her kindle
It was a very cold night -15c
Taking a moment to take it all in
Paula looking happy with her bad self
Top of the second 5,000m pass
We had breakfast outdoors in the sun
The second to last day was a day of lakes
The team sitting by Peru's answer to 'Blue Lake'
Racing ahead to get the kettle on
We stayed in a small village on our last night
It even had some hot pools!!
Local goods - they were beautifully made
We had a feast on the last night - two lambs were slaughtered and beer was drunk
You can take the boy of wainui...but
It was very much like a hangi using hot rocks, hay and earth
Oh and don't forget the spuds
Pistol gave a speech along with our tips
