Belmont Regional Park Traverse

Monday 6 April 2026

Leader: Kate Livingston

The track traversing a north/south line from Haywards to Korokoro in Belmont Regional Park is Puke Ariki and is 22 kms in length. This time we walked from south to north so that we might have the light south-easterly wind behind us. We also made a decision to use a car shuttle arrangement for travel between the start and finish rather than use the train (Petone to Manor Park stations) as buses were replacing trains over Easter and the bus did not go directly to Manor Park. So we ended up as a group of 8 travelling in four cars leaving two cars at each end.

The track is now very well marked and is easy to follow. Starting at the Cornish Street entrance, we walked up the valley alongside Korokoro Stream and then headed up to Belmont trig to pick up the main part of the track.

From that point on there are lots of smallish ups and downs, mostly over open farm land and past the many WWII ammunition storage sheds.

Happily we had good weather - sunny, little wind, mild - and the pace was moderate so it was very pleasant . We stopped often to admire the view, have a rest, find a Geocache, regroup and so on. In the end it took us a little over 8 hours to get back to the cars at the Dry Creek park entrance at the Haywards end.
