Titahi Bay Coast

Sunday 10 May 2026

Leader: Owen Cox

On a fine day in May, 6 happy day walkers headed for Titahi Bay for an easy-medium coastal walk. We parked the cars in the reserve at the southern end of Titahi Bay. There were great waves after the previous day’s wind, and there were plenty of surfers in the bay.

Starting out

We followed the track that heads up above the cliffs to the road that drops to the coast by the treatment plant outfall at Rukutane. From here we followed the beach until we arrived at a place where the waves were hitting the bottom of the cliff.

The quicker trampers in our party managed to hop across this section between waves while those less agile amongst us got wet feet. Up next was rock scrambling. At one place, a channel funnelled the waves, so we all got our feet wet.

Open Bay

We came across a small car perfectly wedged between the cliff and large boulders. I was puzzled how it got there, as there were no dents on the roof. The route got easier from hereon, with beach walking around Tirau Bay and over flat grass until Open Bay where we had lunch on the beach.

After lunch, we returned via the coast to the northern end of Tirau Bay where we climbed up to treatment plant access road. We followed this road as far the first houses and then turned left onto the outfall road. From here, the road veered left. We carried on down a track that joined the cliff track, which led us back to the cars. As it was not yet 3pm, we headed home via a coffee stop in Porirua.

Those on the trip were:
