Leader: Julie James
Eight of us met at the school at 7:30 am before stopping at Levin to pick me up. Then we all headed to Palmerston North and onto Kahuterawa Road where we set off on our walk. The weather was not looking very promising, with the threat of showers - however, once everyone was ready, no raincoats were required.
The first part of the track followed the Kahuterawa Stream through some beautiful bush to the first swimming hole and picnic table. Then the track made its way beside the stream with some great views, to another picnic table and a swing bridge. We regrouped here before continuing onto where the track climbed steeply for 1.5 km to Toe-Toe Junction. This part of the track was wet and extremely muddy in places.
From here we continued around Toe-Toe Loop Track, viewing the old platinum mines. Some of us ventured down the ladder to inspect the mines. We also viewed a horizontal mine (complete with wetas). This was rather wet underfoot.
The wind was blustery and rather cold in exposed places, so a sheltered place was found where we stopped for our lunch break. This was not for long, as the cooler temperature made everyone keen to keep moving. After completing the Loop Track we retraced our steps to the carpark.
Those on the trip were:
Craig Watkin, Julia Morrice, Julie James, Kate Livingston, Paula Richardson, Petr Kure, Sue Pate, Yingjun Shelton, Annabelle Gibb
Currently there is no photo album for this trip.
