The Mangaone Walkway follows an old bush tramway east of Waikanae, it connects Mangaone North Road to Mangaone South Road. The northern section crosses farmland following a farm road for part of the distance, the southern section follows the Waikanae River through Kaitawa Scenic Reserve. It was historically known as Reikorangi Track.

We started at the northern end with a hill climb up a farm track then a rather pleasant meander (although there are some fallen trees and streams to negotiate) to the Kaitawa Reserve. We decided at this point to leave our bikes and walk through the bush track. This was very pleasant and although much of it could have been biked we were pleased with our decision. We stopped at the river for a snack. We returned to our bikes and all enjoyed the downhill at the end of our mornings ride.
