Leader: Marian Cox
This was an easy day trip. In Marian’s words: “Up hill, down dale then around the coast”.

We left the car by the café at Makara. We started around the bay, then climbed up the ridge to the gun emplacements. Virtually no wind and great views of the coast, Kapiti Island, Cook Strait and The Brothers.

After a brief stop at the top we continued on the track and started along the cycle track for a short distance. This proved not to be a good as the pines that were there have been felled and left on site. They completely block the way, and as the felling was at least a year ago, gorse has overgrown the track, effectively blocking it before you even reach the pine debris/gorse tangle of the pines.

So a quick backtrack and down the vehicle track in the gully/dale to the coast. We then went a short distance around the boulder beach to where the cliffs provided a bit of shade, where we had lunch. From here we had a leisurely one hour walk along the beach and rocks back to the Makara café. After a milkshake or two we headed home.
