Atiwhakatu Hut - King's Birthday

Sunday 1 June 2025

Leader: Kylie Gilbert

We set off from the Holdsworth campsite on a chilly, but beautifully sunny Sunday morning along the Atiwhakatu Track to have lunch at Atiwhakatu Hut.

This was a good load test for my knee. My ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) had been badly damaged, and it was my first club trip in six months! Thankfully my knee held out, and we had a lovely walk along the valley to the hut, with only one slightly misplaced group member who was quickly recovered after a detour where the track had slipped out.

We regrouped at the hut and had a good lunch and a yarn before heading back to the carpark. I’d forgotten how many little ups and downs were on this track, but it’s such a nice track for an easy wander. The diversity of bridges over the numerous streams is interesting and, with the front-country track easily accessible it presents a great opportunity for people-watching as every man and his dog (around 50% of walkers had dogs) were out on the trail.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to give my legs a good stretch and it was so nice to be with my Parawai family again.

Those on the trip were:
