Baring Head

Sunday 17 August 2025

Leader: Paula Richardson

Baring Head has the potential to be very windy, cold and wet, but we struck a perfect winter's day. We met at the school at 9am and headed over to Wainuiomata and then onward to the Baring Head/Orua-Pouanui Track car park.

From the car park we crossed over the bridge and followed the river track to the historic Pump Shed. From here we continued around and then up the hill to the trig where we got magnificent 360 degree views. We returned down the track to the Baring Head Lighthouse for our lunch stop. It is great to see this area being so well cared for and developed. There is a museum, open to all, and the lighthouse and assistant lighthouse keepers' houses have been beautifully restored and are available to hire.

After lunch we continued walking around the coast to the wreck of the SS Paiaka. Then back along the coast, over the hill and back to the cars. 13 km in total and a lovely way to spend a winter's day.
